A team of engineers from Engineers Without Borders traveled with ClearWater to the northeastern Ecuadorian Amazon last week as part of community led efforts to build clean water solutions to the water crisis gripping the region. Here, the engineers reflect on water quality issues in the Quichua town of Rumipamba. The Quichua town of Rumipamba (about an hour south of Coca) has been living with oil contamination for the last forty years. Here a quichua villager is engaged in a rudimentary remediation of a thirty year old Texaco oil spill. The ClearWater delegation (including Engineers without Borders, Amazon Watch, Rainforest Action Network, Groundwork Opportunities and local community leaders) observe and document the legacy of oil contamination in the region. Oil is all pervasive in…

Xingu River, Brazil (June 15, 2012) — From early dawn and into the afternoon, three hundred indigenous people, small farmers, fisherfolk, and townspeople of Altamira, occupied the Belo Monte Dam project, carving out with shovels and picks a passage way on a coffer dam in order to restore the natural flow of the Xingu River. On the eve of the UN Rio+20 Summit, participants gathered in formation spelling out the words “Pare Belo Monte” meaning “Stop Belo Monte” to send a message to the world about the devastating impacts of the dam. Here in the lower Xingu, on a 80 kilometer bend through the ancestral territory of several indigenous tribes, the Brazilian government is moving ahead with construction of the third-largest dam in the world and one of the Amazon’s most controversial “development” projects – the Belo Monte Dam.
I met a man recently, a farmer in the oil fields, who told me of his life. It was the start of dusk, and the man was across the road from me, hunched in work. He was with a small boy. I presumed it was his grandchild. I watched from afar, the way they worked in silence, beneath the light and heat of the gas flare. After a time he signaled to me, a pleasant welcoming gesture. We began a conversation which was light and sad, and lasted only a short while. At one point, as happens when there is warmth between strangers, I touched his arm as I was speaking, and I felt only bone. The boy had disappeared, almost unnoticed.
